This is a photo taken during Thomas Wolfe's Harvard years (1920-1922). The man sitting in the
chair is Wolfe's friend Kenneth Raisbeck. He is portrayed as Francis Starwick in Of Time and the
River. In that novel Wolfe's fictional counterpart, Eugene Gant, discovers his friend is a homosexual. The
Starwick Episodes, edited by Richard S. Kennedy, was the 1989 special publication of The Thomas Wolfe
Society. It contains scenes between Eugene Gant and Francis Starwick that were cut from the Of
Time and the River manuscript.
"Francis Starwick, on first sight, was a youth of medium height and
average weight, verging perhaps toward slenderness, with a pleasant ruddy face, brown eyes, a mass
of curly auburn-reddish hair, and a cleft chin..."
