How to find your video in the library

Finding videos tutorial

 

 

 

Access the library's online catalog and click on "Advanced Search."

Always select "Videorecording" in the "Material Type" box to limit to videorecordings (see image).




If you know the title of the video you can search the library catalog by TITLE

OR

You can search the library catalog using a keyword search (select "Any Field") if you are unsure of the title

OR

You can perform a SUBJECT search to find videos on a specific subject

OR

You can search for an actor or director by performing an AUTHOR search (e.g. Cooper, Gary).

 

Locating Your Video:

Note the LOCATION and the CALL # for your video and make sure that it is "Available." You might think of the "Location" as the "Neighborhood" the video resides in and the "Call Number" as the "Address" of the video.

There are 6 locations ("neighborhoods") for videos and all are located on the first floor within close proximity of each other. Within the catalog record (example above), you can click on the specific location of your video (e.g. "UNCW Recreational DVD") to see the location of your video on a map or you can click on the links below to view a map for each location in a new window.

Once you have noted the location, you'll need to note the call number of the video. Each call number informs you of the section within each location (e.g. Action, Comedy, etc.) your video is in.

All recreational films (or "feature films") will start with this call number: PN1995.9.xx and all television programs will start with this call number: PN1992.8.xx. To find out which section within a specific location your video is in, note the letters and numbers listed in the "xx" section of the call number and use the list below to determine which section your video is in.

Drama (those that do not fit into the other approved genres) .D7
Horror .H6
Musical .M86
Reality (Television programs only) .R43

Silent films will start with this call number: PN1995.75.xx.

Foreign feature films wil start with this call number: PN1997.xx and Foreign television programs will start with this call number: PN1992.8.xx.
