Library Policies - Lending for UNCW Students

Welcome to the William Madison Randall Library. We encourage your use of all library materials, facilities, and reference services. Please inquire at the Reference Desk for assistance in using the Library's resources and services.

Students enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington may borrow materials by presenting their valid UNCW One Card.

When borrowing library materials, please observe the following:

1. Have your UNCW One Card available.

2. Borrowing privileges are not transferable, with one exception. High school students enrolled in grades 9-12 may be added as an authorized user to an adult parent's or guardian's borrower's card. By sponsoring their child, the parent or guardian assumes responsibility for the return of all materials and the payment of any charges assessed for damage or over dues. To check out materials, the high school student must present their parent's or guardian's borrower card and their high school identification card or driver's license at the Randall Library Circulation Desk.

3. You are responsible for items borrowed until returned to the Library. Lost or damaged materials must be paid for; we charge the replacement cost plus accumulated overdue charges.

Loan Periods

For undergraduate students, the loan period is 21 days for books and government documents and 7 days for most audiovisual materials. Reference books, periodicals, and other materials in high demand must be used in the Library.

For graduate students, the loan period is 28 days for books and government documents, 7 days for most audiovisual materials, and 2 days for periodicals. Other materials must be used in the Library.

Loan periods for reserve materials are established by course instructors, and may be 2 hours, 4 hours, 1 day, or 3 days.  You may borrow 2 reserve items at a time.

Renewals

You may renew overdue materials online (access My Library Record , )by phone, or in-person and any overdue charges will be added to your account. By renewing, however, you can avoid the continuing increase in the overdue charge.  If another person has requested a hold on an item, renewal is not permitted.

A/V Renewals
Renewals for videos, DVD's, CDs and audiobooks are limited to two (2) per item.

Overdue, Damage, and Replacement Charges

The overdue charge is $.25 per item per day for books and government documents, and $.50 per item per day for other materials, to a maximum of $6.00 per item. Overdue charges for videos, DVD's, CDs and audiobooks are $1.00 per item per day, to a maximum of $10.00 per item.

For reserve materials, the overdue charge is as follows: $.50 per item per hour (or fraction thereof) for 2-hour and 4-hour items, $1.00 per item per day for 1-day and 3-day items. Maximum overdue charges per item: $6.00.

If an item is damaged or lost, you will be charged the repair or replacement costs in addition to any overdue charge that has accumulated before reporting the loss.  Please note: water damage cannot be repaired, but must be replaced.

UNCW students, will have their borrowing privileges blocked when:

All charges must be paid before you will be allowed to register for the following semester, to graduate, or to receive transcripts. Avoid fines; return or renew your borrowed materials.

Please remember to request assistance at the Reference Desk if you need help identifying and using the Library's resources.

Questions about this policy maybe addressed to Joyce Johnson, Circulation Supervisor.
