Library Policies- Mediated Computer Searches

WHAT IS AN ONLINE COMPUTER SEARCH?

Just as you search databases on the Library homepage, CDs, or in print, it is possible to search other databases available through online system vendors using our mediated searching service. Many disciplines are included in one or more databases. Usually the information retrieved is a collection of bibliographic citations or references to sources of information; however, there are databases of statistics, chemical structures, and the full texts of some sources. A search is conducted for you by a reference librarian trained in database content and search techniques.

All searches are prepared with care and accuracy, but we cannot guarantee that appropriate citations will be found.

WHEN DO I ASK FOR A COMPUTER SEARCH?

WHAT DOES A SEARCH COST?

The library absorbs the cost for all UNCW students, faculty or staff searches within bugetary discretion so there is no fee.

Charges for North Carolina Residents include the cost of the search plus a 15% surcharge. Charges are incurred for search terms, database time, downloading, and telecommunications. A typical search can cost from $5 to $50 or more, depending on the file selected and the other cost parameters.

HOW DO I INITIATE A SEARCH?

Please ask a reference librarian for a request form. A reference librarian will assist you in filing out the form. Once completed, turn the form in at the Reference Desk and schedule an appointment if you wish to be present during the search. Most searches will be completed within 1 to 2 days, depending on librarians' schedules. For further information, please call 962-3760 or stop by the Reference Desk.

Search Agreement:

While searches are formulated and conducted with care, no guarantee of completeness or accuracy can be made. Basic computer searches are offered to UNCW students and faculty at no charge, within guidelines set up by the Reference Department. Other searches are done on a cost recovery basis and the total cost for these searches must be paid by the person requesting the search. Computer search fees are added to the person's account at the Circulation Desk and must be paid there. Non-university users pay an additional 15% surcharge.
