The
Herman Blizzard Rotary Archives Become Part of
Randall Library Collection
Past District
Governor Herman Blizzard's life-long passion for Rotary International
began when he joined the Wilmington Rotary Club on June 6, 1956. What's
known
fondly
as "Herman's Archives" resulted from Herman's meticulous collecting
of local, national and international Rotary memorabilia. From fragile
books containing minutes of the Wilmington Rotary Club's earliest meetings
in 1915, to programs and proceedings from nearly every Rotary International
Convention in the past 30 years, to more than 50 years of Wilmington
Rotary club bulletins and newspaper clippings, to Rotary flags from
hundreds of national and international Rotary clubs, Herman has collected
and collected and collected. Rotarians from other clubs knew of Herman's
passion for Rotary history and they often contributed documents adding
to his collection.
He was
chairman of the board of Coastal Lighting Supply Co. at the time of
his retirement. Herman continues to serve as club historian, and his
archives, until recently, were housed in Herman's "office"
at 108 N. Front St. in Wilmington. Thankfully, his wonderful collection
is now archived in the Special Collections section of Randall Library
at UNCW.
