1950-51:
The annual meeting with farmers of the county was held at the Wrightsboro
Clubhouse on June 19. Adam Smith provided equipment for a horseshoe
pitching contest at 6:30 and by 7:30 everyone was glad to sit down to
one of the famous meals provided by the ladies of the Wrightsboro Club.
A.R. Howard, agricultural agent for the Coast Line Railroad, presented
the program in which he compared the business of farming with other
businesses. The club decided to sponsor a Student Loan Fund for the
purpose of lending money to high school graduates who wish to attend
Wilmington College or other schools. It is believed the fund will be
of great value to boys and girls in the community who might otherwise
not be able to attend college. -- President J. Mitchell Jenkins,
Jr.
1951-52:
Our service to the community continued with an increased interest in
the Student Loan Fund and our contribution to it of $1,900 from our
Rotary Round-Up.
We contributed over $1,000 to such worthwhile activities as our Live
Stock Fund, Christmas baskets, Junior High band uniforms, Azalea Festival
and float, Williston Glee Club and campership for Girls Scouts and YMCA.
-- President Heber W. Johnson
1952-53:
Through the generosity and cooperation of Adam Smith, a swimming class
for handicapped children, with a team of instructors present to give
supervised exercises as well as swimming lessons, was established. --
President Joseph B. Fox, Jr.
1955-56:
Miss Nancy Lee Smith reported on her activities during her year as a
Rotary Fellow at Aberdeen, Scotland.
The Rural-Urban Committee, headed by Charlie Harrington, had an active
year. A total of $416.25 was loaned to 4H Club and FFA boys for the
purpose of purebred livestock. Repayments this year under this program
totaled $552.36, including repayments received on previous loans made
this a very satisfactory operation.
-- President L. Graham Walton
1956-57:
Len Alpern and his Orthopedic Committee deserve special mention for
the long hours of quite labor performed on this club project. It seems
to me that every member should cherish the hope of some day being a
member of this committee for the personal satisfaction which must inevitably
come from individual participation in this humanitarian enterprise.
-- William M. Randall
1958-59:
I feel that we have had a splendid year. We have taken into our membership
some fine gentlemen; true, we have lost some exceptional fellows and
good friends, but I further feel that any and all men profit and grow
in grace by Rotary affiliation...In closing I would like to see our
Wilmington Rotary Club enlarge and expand the operation of the Student
Loan Fund; I would like to see a "bang-up" civic club center
in Wilmington; I would like to see Rotary in this area extended whenever
possible through new members so long as we always put the emphasis on
quality rather than quantity. -- Lawrence C. Rose
1959-60: I was pleased to learn while attending Rotary International's
Convention in New York last year that at the original meeting in California
for the organization of the United Nations, approximately 60 percent
present were either Rotarians or former Rotarians. It is my understanding
the Carlos P. Romulo, a former director of RI, was the first Secretary
General of the UN. -- President Robert H. Tate
