Rehder Family Papers

Jessie Rehder was born in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1908, and lived there for the majority of her life. She was a prolific writer, and published several novels, short stories, and books of poetry. From 1947 to 1967 Rehder was a professor of creative writing at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where she was the first woman to be granted tenure in the English Department. While there she extended the creative writing program to six courses, developed an Honors Program in writing, and worked as an advisor with students on several campus publications. The materials in this collection consists of the manuscripts, correspondence, and diaries of Jessie Rehder.
