Paul Clifford Collection of African and Pre-Columbian Art
photos, appraisals and lecture notes

The main body of the collection is comprised of photos of individual art pieces noting origin, composition, and approximate age, and appraised value. Mr. Clifford began collecting at random and when affordable but realized how valuable the pieces were historically. The collection includes figures, craft work, utensils, bowls, weapons, paintings, drawings, textiles, and religious icons. Most are identified and photographed. Also included are several lists of items on loan to various museums for exhibit. Mr. Clifford's main pieces are African (Ghana, Cameroon, Zaire, Liberia, Angola, Guinea), Pre-Columbian and early Mayan.

Included in the inventory are numerous articles from newspapers and magazines on both Mr. Clifford and the history of antiquities in the period of his interest and a sequence of photos documenting the restoration of 17th thru 19th century Russian icons.

This collection was given to the William Madison Randall Library by Dr. Gerald Shinn.
