This collection not only contains general information regarding the North Carolina Living Treasure Award, including receipts of income and awarded gifts, but also includes press releases, articles, photographs, and awards banquet details for individual honorees.

The North Carolina Living Treasure Award was established in 1987 by Dr. Gerald Shinn, through the Museum of World Cultures, to recognize North Carolina artists who work in the traditional arts.  The Museum of World Cultures has since become a part of the University of North Carolina—Wilmington’s Randall Library, which now administers the North Carolina Living Treasure Award.  Awarded annually until 1995, the title of North Carolina Living Treasure is now granted biennially.

The North Carolina Living Treasures Award is made possible by an endowment from Martin Meyerson, M.D., in memory of his mother, Dorothy Meyerson.

This Collection has been designated Accession Number 149 of the Manuscripts Collection, Special Collections Department, William Madison Randall Library, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, 601 South College Road, Wilmington, North Carolina 28403-3297.
