Langtry Post Card
Collection
The Philippine Islands and Vladivostok Postal Card Collection consists of three separate segments. This first part is a single real-photo card, circa 1918, "The Czeck [sic.] army headquarters at Vladivostok," which is also labeled in Japanese [not translated]. The Czech Legion, composed of Czech prisoners of war who wanted to fight on the side of the Entente, broke with Bolshevik authorities during the Russian Civil War and fought in support of the White movement.(1)
The second segment of the collection consists of nineteen real-photo chromolithographic images of scenes of the Philippine Islands, circa 1907, with Mindanao, Cebu, and Jolo Islands predominating. Marked Camera Supply Company, Manila P.I.-- printed in Germany, these cards were never used.
The third part of the collection consists of fourteen black and white real-photo images circa 1906, also never used, of the Moro peoples and some graphic scenes of the Moro rebellion. The Moros [Filipino Muslims who lived on the island of Mindanao] fought a guerilla action against the American annexation of the Philippine Islands. American retaliation was savage; Moros suffered severe casualties at the Battle of Mt Dajo, Jolo Island. In 1906 some 600 Moros on the island of Jolo were slaughtered by American troops under the command of General Leonard Wood.(2)
This collection was donated to the William Madison Randall Library by Mrs. Constance W. Langtry in April 1985.
This collection has been designated Accession Number 131 of the Manuscripts Collection, Special Collections Department, William Madison Randall Library, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, 601 South College Road, Wilmington, North Carolina 28403-3297.
