LONG SKETCH
This crayon sketch on paper [9"x 113/4"]
is of three images of male heads: a profile and back side view of an adult and a
profile of an adolescent. It is initialed by the artist; the date is on a corner
which has been broken off and may be 1968 or 1969. The word "studies" has been
penciled at the bottom of the paper.
Ben Long, a Statesville, North Carolina native and graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, studied the ancient art of fresco painting in Italy. His church frescoes in Glendale Springs and Charlotte, North Carolina as well as his works in the Nations Bank building in the same city have attracted international attention and critical acclaim.
Ms. Rebecca Brown, of Wilmington, donated this drawing to William Madison Randall Library in March, 1997.
