BEN LONG SKETCH

This crayon sketch on paper [9"x 113/4"] is of three images of male heads: a profile and back side view of an adult and a profile of an adolescent. It is initialed by the artist; the date is on a corner which has been broken off and may be 1968 or 1969. The word "studies" has been penciled at the bottom of the paper.

Ben Long, a Statesville, North Carolina native and graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, studied the ancient art of fresco painting in Italy. His church frescoes in Glendale Springs and Charlotte, North Carolina as well as his works in the Nations Bank building in the same city have attracted international attention and critical acclaim.

Ms. Rebecca Brown, of Wilmington, donated this drawing to William Madison Randall Library in March, 1997.

It has been designated Accession Number 129 of the Manuscripts Collection, Special Collections Department, William Madison Randall Library, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, 601 South College Road, Wilmington, North Carolina 28403-3297.
