STORE
LEDGER, 1788 - 1790 WILMINGTON, NC
This collection contains a store ledger that is believed to have been in the Kittrell family since the ledger was in use from 1788 to 1790. It is possible that two Kittrell brothers came from Wales to Wilmington, and became shop keepers. The name may have originally been Cotter, or Cotterall.
We do know from the ledger that a second store in "Fayette" was under the same ownership with cash and debit accounts reflected in the ledger.
In the front of the ledger are loose articles, "The News' Night School at Home," from a newspaper dated 1897, with instructions on accounting and book keeping from Drexel Institute, Philadelphia.
The ledger is valuable to genealogists as quite a few city residents of that time traded with the store and are clearly noted.
This collection was donated to the William Madison Randall Library by Mr. and Mrs. Norman G. Kittrell.
This collection has been designated Accession Number 114 of the Manuscripts Collection, Special Collections Department, William Madison Randall Library, University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
