Sand Roots Manuscript

This collection contains the photocopy of a corrected typescript of Ben Dixon MacNeill's (1889-1960) manuscript originally entitled By So Many Roots. Although this draft is dated 11:20 A.M., Monday, October 27, 1944, Buxton, Cape Hatteras on the final page, Sand Roots, his first and only novel was published in 1963. MacNeill did not show the manuscript to his publisher until The Hatterasman was nearing publication in 1958.  The Hatterasman was the winner of the Mayflower Cup award in 1958. Claude Howell illustrated The Hatterasman and designed the book jacket for Sand Roots.

Publication rights for Sand Roots were given to St. Andrews Presbyterian College. H. Leon Gatlin III of St. Andrews English Department cut and edited the manuscript for publication in 1963.

Claude Howell donated this collection to the Wilmington College Library in 1963.

This Collection has been designated Accession Number 93 of the Manuscripts Collection, Special Collections Department, William Madison Randall Library, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, 601 South College Road, Wilmington, North Carolina 28403-3297.
