East Coast Surfboards

In late 1964, East Coast Surfboards opened in Carolina Beach, North Carolina under the ownership of Harold (HAL) Petty and Lank (LAN) Lancaster. [1] Located at 735 Carolina Avenue, it was the first surf shop that opened in the Lower Cape Fear, and was also one of the first in North Carolina. Perhaps most interesting, it was also the first (and quite possibly the only) North Carolina-based surf shop to shape their own surfboards rather than special order them from California during that time.

In 1960 Lank's father purchased the Kupboard Grocery, and by 1965 the grocery's old meat market and convenience store section was converted to shaping and selling surfboards. It was on the store's side porch and back room that Lank and Harold would shape and glass their boards, while using the front-end of the shop to sell clothing and accessories. These included "baggies" (surf trunks) and shirts along with bikinis and "petal pushers" for the ladies - Lank's wife, Genie, was a driving force behind the shop's fashions for women.

The store was open through the spring 1967, when Lank and Harold realized that they couldn't keep up with the growing demand without additional physical space and financial support. More on East Coast Surfboards will appear in the future.
