- Saturday, January 23 - Sunday, January 24, 2010 | TreeFest | TreeFest, Wilmington‘s annual tree giveaway extravaganza will be held inside Independence Mall on the JC Penny wing. In the span of 36 hours, over 12,000 trees will be given away! Each resident may receive up to five tree seedlings at no charge, however we do encourage donations to pay for next year‘s trees.
This community event started in 1996 following the destruction of many trees by hurricanes Bertha and Fran and has grown into a Wilmington winter tradition. Trees benefit our community by increasing property values, filtering pollution, and making our space more appealing. Trees, however, do not live forever and many die each year due to disease, development, or old age. Planting a young tree is an investment in the future and a gift to the community. The trees offered will be one-year old bare root seedlings. The species available include baldcypress, black walnut, crape myrtle, eastern red cedar, flowering dogwood, green ash, live oak, longleaf pine, persimmon, redbud, river birch, southern red oak, shumard oak, swamp blackgum, swamp chestnut oak, and wild plum. Please note that species availability is subject to change without notice and trees are available on a first come, first serve basis.
