"One Book, One Community" 2005Welcome to New Hanover County's first annual "One Book, One Community" program! UNC Wilmington's Randall Library, in partnership with New Hanover County Public Library, the Cape Fear Community College Learning Resource Center, New Hanover High School, and other local businesses and organizations, is working to bring the “One Book, One Community” experience to Wilmington during January and February of 2005. This program asks everyone in the community to read the same book at the same time, and then come together for various events and readings to share and discuss. For our first book we have selected Dana Sachs' The House on Dream Street. Dana is a local author, a graduate of the UNCW MFA program in Creative Writing, and a part -time lecturer for the UNCW English department. Her book is a memoir about her experiences as an American living in Vietnam in the early 1990s, just after tourist visas were made available to US citizens. We hope that this book will not only promote literacy and a love for reading, but also celebrate the diversity that makes New Hanover County such a rich community. |
