UNC Coastal Library Consortium
Coastal
Consortium Advisory Committee Meeting
October
25, 2000
Pembroke,
NC
Members
Present: Lillian Brewington,
Jeff Campbell, Robert Canida, Eloise Cave, Sue Cody, Arlene Hanerfeld, Dan
Pfohl and Jean Sexton
1.
The minutes of the May 11th meeting were approved with the
following correction. Item 12
should read, “Arlene stated that Annie Wu...”
Arlene asked that the minutes be emailed to her within a couple of
weeks.
2.
Election of new Chair - The policy of the committee has been to rotate
the chair within the three institutions.
Jean nominated Jeff Campbell as this was FSU’s turn in the rotation. The committee agreed that we should aim for three
meetings per year but would definitely have two.
3.
FSU’s Fujitsue Printer - Dan asked if FSU was not going to use the
Fujitsue printer they had, could he work something out to get it for UNCW. Jeff has not had a chance to see if he could get it to print.
He wanted a couple of weeks to do some testing with it.
4.
LinkBot Licenses - LinkBot has changed their business policies.
At the present, every person must have a license even within the
institution. The cost of the
license is $450. Arlene has the
names of some other link checkers from the IUG meeting last year but she feels
that LinkBot has better features and works well for us.
Dan will continue to provide reports to the Consortium through
December.
5.
INTL Use Count - The internal count has not been reset to 0.
The committee agreed that it was too late for this year but it would be
reset on July 1, 2001 to run through June 30, 2002.
6.
Circulation Issues - There seems to be a problem with circulation staff
not understanding loan rules, etc. Different
loan rules apply at the different institutions.
It was suggested that we might think of reviewing loan rules at a joint
session. FSU and UNCP block their
patrons whereas UNCW does not.
7.
Merge Patron Records - Dan asked that we are careful when merging
patron records because there is a good chance that you will lose some data.
8.
Consortium Web Pages - The Consortium web page should be updated to
reflect individual homepages. Let
Dan know of any changes which need to be made.
9.
Individual Proxies for each Institution - a way to get individual
statistics for each library Internet
Explorer 5.5 seems to be causing problems.
It works better if the patron downloads Netscape.
Collecting statistics seems to be a problem. Innovative is working on trying to correct this problem.
10.
My Millennium - It can be
set up for staff or patron type and when you log in it identifies you and
restricts certain functions to certain patron types.
Dan will set it up for staff and let us know when it is available.
11.
INNOPAC Extended Approval Plan Software - The invoice could be split
three ways with $2900 for FSU, $2100 for UNCP and $7000 for UNCW. The committee will revisit next year.
12.
Internet Resources Cataloging - There was a lengthy discussion of exactly
what we are doing, if the committee should be re-instituted, and the makeup of
the committee. Arlene provided a
review of the progress report of the original committee to the library directors
dated June 14, 1999. Apparently
there was no final report. Arlene
will ask Teresa for a copy of the most current report and make it available to
the committee. The committee agreed
to send a recommendation to the directors stating that we have reviewed the
draft and are hereby making the following recommendations: The committee
strongly suggests that call numbers should not be used for internet sites.
If any university insists on using call numbers, they must be suppressed.
There will be problems with records of the 12,000 books from NetLibrary
because they do not have OCLC numbers in the marc records.
13.
NetLibrary on INNOPAC - Dan and Arlene led a discussion on how to link
the titles from the homepage, loan periods, holds, etc.
14.
Other Concerns - Advanced keyword searching is more complex and there
seems to be problems with usage. Dan
feels that is more a training issue and volunteered to put together a training
session for the reference staff of FSU and UNCP.
Members were asked to look at the review files and remind the staff that
all improperly named files could be deleted at any time.
File names should include the date, institution and the person’s
initials who created the file.
The next meeting of the committee would be after the meeting of the
Innovative User’s Group and would be held at UNCW.
15.
Adjournment - The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
